In the field of mechanical transmission, the word ‘gearbox’ and ‘reducer’ are frequently used, but they have different technical connotations and application. Understanding these differences is important for correct equipment selection and system design.

The differences between gearboxes (transmissions) and reducer(such as worm reducer,planetary reducer):

Purpose - Gearbox is used to increase or decrease rotational speed and torque. Depending on requirements, it can reduce speed to increase torque or increase speed to reduce torque.In motor vehicles, the gearbox can reduce speed by engaging lower gears to amplify torque for hill climbing, while higher gears increase speed to enhance fuel efficiency.

Reducer is specifically used to decrease speed and increase torque.In the mixer, where the motor's rotational speed is too high but torque is low, a WR inline helical reducer may be connected to output the motor's high speed into the low speed and high torque required by the mixing shaft. This ensures effective mix of materials.

Design - Gearbox structure is relatively complex, include multiple gear pairs, clutch mechanisms, shift actuators, and several shafts (input shaft, output shaft, reverse gear shaft, etc.) to achieve flexible gear ratio changes.
The structure of reducers is more compact and integrated, often include single-stage or multi-stage gear transmissions. The input and output shafts of reducers are usually coaxial or arranged on vertical/parallel, and generally lack gear-shifting function.

Use - Gearbox: Working in scenarios requiring active, dynamic adjustment of power output, it work as the control part of the entire transmission system. The gearbox in wind turbines must elevate the extremely low rotational speed captured by the rotor blades to the high speed required by the generator.
Reducer: Working as the terminal execution unit under the transmission chain, reducer matches the speed and torque between motor and the working mechine.
High-precision RV reducers or harmonic reducers usually is assembled with servo motors on robot arms.Reducer are output the motor's high speed and low torque into the low speed and high torque and high-precision positioning required for robot arms.
