What causes gear overheating and wear in a gearbox?

Dec 22, 2025

After investigating this issue, the technicians at ZHEJIANG WUMA DRIVE CO.,LTD found four common causes:
1. Poor tooth surface roughness. Poor tooth surface roughness causes direct contact or collision between the high points of the gear teeth during operation, leading to wear at these high points and generating heat.
2. Lubricating oil viscosity issues. Insufficient lubricating oil viscosity causes the oil film to rupture under heavy loads, resulting in direct contact between the two tooth surfaces and frictional heat.
3. Problems during maintenance. For example, overfilling the lubricating oil causes excessive oil churning loss during operation, generating heat. This heat raises the overall temperature of the gearbox. Lowering the lubricating oil viscosity also reduces the oil film's load-bearing capacity, leading to direct frictional wear on the gears.
4.Problems with the gear tooth profile. Poor contact areas on the tooth surfaces cause localized wear, generating heat that then diffuses to the surrounding area, further exacerbating the wear.
