Which chamfering method is most commonly used?

After investigation and research, the technical staff of Zhejiang Wuma Drive Co., Ltd. have identified the following three most commonly used chamfering图片1(2b6943c932).png methods:

Chamfering is an essential process for ensuring gear quality. Depending on the gear's position and function within the gearbox, the chamfering requirements vary. So, what are the classifications of gear tooth chamfering?

There are three types of gear tooth chamfering: rounded corners, sharp corners, and ridges.

Rounded corners eliminate sharp corners through a smooth, rounded transition. This is achieved through washing or grinding. Its core advantages are stress dispersion and fatigue resistance, making it suitable for high-load gears, such as automotive transmissions. It can also reduce heat treatment, decarburization, and meshing noise. However, the machining process requires strict control of the rounded corner accuracy, resulting in higher costs. It is often used in applications requiring hard tooth surfaces and long service life, such as wind turbine gearboxes and precision robot transmissions.

Chamfering creates sharp edges, achieved through direct cutting via hobbing or gear shaping. Its advantages include simple structure, fast shifting, and suitability for manual transmissions and other applications requiring frequent operation. However, sharp edges are prone to burrs, requiring post-processing, and demanding high machining precision. While low in cost, its lifespan is relatively short and dependent on material strength.

Beveling creates small facets along the tooth profile, processed in batches using hobs or grinding machines. Its function is to prevent impacts, remove burrs, reduce assembly damage and surface roughness, making it suitable for general-purpose mechanical gears. It offers high machining efficiency, but depth control is essential to avoid reducing tooth surface strength. Due to its moderate strength and cost, it is an economical option for non-critical transmission systems.
